Haloumi in Australia
Haloumi is a Cypriot style cheese traditionally made with goat and sheep milk. In Australia, it is typically made with cow’s milk. It has a moderate fat content, but is high in protein and calcium. It is also a fantastic source of zinc, magnesium, vitamin A, and B vitamins. This makes Haloumi a highly nutritious and wholesome food that is also incredibly delicious.
For this reason, it is a part of the Mediterranean diet which is known to have many health benefit.
Haloumi has a semi-firm, bouncy texture and delicious salty, savoury flavour. It is one the most versatile cheeses available as it can be eaten fresh, grilled, pan or deep fried, or even oven baked. This makes it incredible to use in a variety of different dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is commonly infused with mint to enhance its flavours and topped with lemon juice for a tangy kick.
Another huge hit at the moment is haloumi bites. Deep fried haloumi coated with spices and paired with a pomegranate or watermelon sauce (trust us… really). Fresco currently sells pre-cut haloumi chips direct to customers at our factory in Burleigh Heads.
Haloumi is also becoming increasingly popular as a meat alternative for vegetarians due to its high protein and vitamin content. In the UK, haloumi consumption is at an all-time high and continues to grow as the cheese has become a staple in almost all restaurant menus. Australia is set to follow suit, and you can expect to see more and more haloumi featuring on your breakfast, lunch and dinner menus.
